Wolf Speaks

Drums beat in rhythm
A pounding heartbeat…
within the spirit
Of him who
Watches with wary
Eyes from
the mountain peak…
Swirls of smoke
Rise up to heaven
A campfire’s homage
wafting past his nostrils
And beckon
“Wolf speak!”
He looks to his mate
Then walks away
And bids her farewell
With a growl.
in painful transition
He takes his position
And summons the pack
with his howl.
He runs through the woods
on a path to the valley
He quenches his thirst at a stream,
then bays to the night
in praise of his freedom;
a man who's a wolf in a dream.
Drums beat in rhythm
A pounding heartbeat…
of him who calls out to stars
in all their glory
in ecstasy
atop the mountain peak.
Moonlight commands an encore
a heartfelt soul song,
and beckons
"Wolf speak!"
