Airbrush

I have been airbrushing on and off for about 20 years now. Not willing to deal with high tech paints and solvents of the automotive industry, I found painting portraits just as rewarding, while still using water based media. With computer graphics taking most of my time lately, I rarely have the time to undertake new airbrush projects. Most of my recent projects have been for family and friends.....here's a few...

The most time consuming portion of any airbrush project is the preparation. All of the hard edges are created with masks, while the graduated tones are done freehand or with a "soft" mask.

Hard masks can be anything from a straight edge to a piece of paper, held or applied to the board to create a "hard" edge. Soft masks can be anything from a piece of paper, to a piece of cotton, held away from the board to create a "soft" edge.

While most of the foundation of the painting is done with the airbrush, the detailing brings the painting to life......this requires a steady hand and a thin brush.

Another challenging aspect of "photo-realistic" airbrushing, is translating the details from a photograph to the board. The size of the finished painting will be a factor in how much detail you will be able to use.....the larger the finished painting, the more detail you can add....more detail makes a more accurate representation of the photo....
