The tool I used for 90% of the work involved with the restoration of the photo's is called a "cloning" paint brush......This "brush" duplicates or "clones" the colors from one area of the bitmap to another. In this case, I would right click to set the position of the original area to be cloned (shown by the circle with the +) and paint it to the new location (shown in the circle without the +). Options I typically use for this brush include brush size, transparancy and soft or hard edges. The transparancy setting allows you to paint the cloned area in small amounts over the area to be restored, this allows you to blend the damaged area away, rather than create an exact clone that would undoubtedly require more work to soften or smooth over.
