Hypno-Sand Tray, What Is It?

Many of those who come through my office are intrigued by the growing collection of items on my shelves. I find that I am constantly attempting to explain to people exactly what sand play is, so I thought I would just write a little article about it. Basically, it is a non-verbal way of working with the sub-conscious mind. The subconscious mind works with symbols, images, and metaphors. This is why dreams speak to us in this way, and why we often have to unravel the meaning of the dreams by exploring the symbols and images that come up for us.

The technique involves using a tray filled with sand that can be wet or dry, and allowing the intuitive self to choose available items to represent the inner process. In manipulating the components of the inner landscape, it is possible to shift perspective and awareness and change the flow of energy, oftentimes breaking through emotional or thought patterns that have been holding us back. Putting language to the work comes at the end of the session. My role is to help you get into the trance state at the beginning of the session, and in asking strategic questions at the end of the session to help you unravel and express the tray in your own terms. In many cases the shift in energy comes before the verbalization. Just in building the landscape and manipulating it, much inner wisdom can be revealed, and new pathways can open up.

The collection is growing, but has a ways to go. My thanks and appreciation to those who have made contributions to this colossal effort. This work offers a powerful modality for personal transformation.
